Yachts head out from Dun Laoghaire for Round Ireland 2016 (Photos)

Exciting weekend for sailing as some of the world’s top racing yachts set sail for Wicklow to compete in the Volvo Round Ireland Race. Dun Laoghaire harbour was busy as many of the boats set out early on Saturday morning.

The race began Saturday afternoon as part of Sailfest, a biennial event happening all weekend in Wicklow with food, entertainment and family fun. Over 60 teams of top class sailors are taking part in Ireland’s largest offshore race. With 704 nautical miles ahead of them these impressive boats set off early yesterday morning from Dun Laoghaire harbour.

The harbour was bustling with activity as the boats sailed around and out of the harbour.  There plenty of wildlife was on the move too, with graceful terns swooping to feast on the jellyfish massing at the harbour walls.
