Local fisherman Charlie O’Malley’s catch was a rare one indeed – the odds of netting an incredibly rare Ghost lobster is believed to be an astronomical 1 in a 100 million.
O’Malley was fishing off the coast of Achill Island last week when he discovered the white lobster caught in his nets. It’s estimated that only 1 in 100 million lobsters are albino, entirely lacking in colored pigments.
The unusual Ghost lobster has escaped the dinner table and was donated to the Achill Experience, Mayo’s first aquarium that recently celebrated its first anniversary.
