Killybegs gets worlds largest marine food factory

Killybegs is to get the worlds largest marine food ingredients plant following an unsuccessful appeal by An Taisce.

Killybegs will get the worlds largest marine food ingredient plant in joint venture between Killybegs Fishermens Organisation and Norwegian firm Biomarine Science Technology.

Donegal County Council granted conditional planning permission last year for the development but An Taisce lodged an appeal. That appeal has now be rejected.

The new plant will process up to 50,000 tonnes of fish a year and will provide 70 jobs when it is operational with a further 50 during the construction phase.

Its production facilities will be extracting nutrients, proteins and oils from Boarfish and Blue whiting to produce proteins, oils and calcium to be used as food ingredients.
