Super trawler suspicion surrounds dolphins deaths

Three dead dolphins have been found in the last seven days off the west coast of Kerry in circumstances that suggest they were discarded trawler bycatch.

The number of deaths in a short space of time and the discovery of rope on the tail of one of the dolphins has led some to believe the dolphins were caught by trawlers and subsequently disposed.

The presence of a fleet of factory ships working west of the Blasket Islands supports this notion.

Irish waters have been a whale and dolphin sanctuary since 1991 but this is the latest in a series of dolphin deaths that has seen increased calls for EU observers to be placed on boats to protect vulnerable marine life.
