This excellent and moving documentary recalls the story of the last people to leave the Blasket islands.
The islands were inhabited by a completely Irish-speaking population but persistent emigration of its young people led to a drop in population. By 1953 only 22 inhabitants remained. This was the year the Blaskets were sadly abandoned.
Fortunately, much of the traditions and way of life on the islands are written down. These include the works An tOileánach (The Islandman) by Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig by Peig Sayers and Fiche Blian ag Fás (Twenty Years A-Growing) by Muiris Ó Súilleabháin.
This documentary recalls the events around the last people to leave the Blasket islands and where they went afterwards.
