Skellig Michael visitor numbers set to soar as two new ferries added

Two new boats have been permitted for use in transporting tourists over to Skellig Michael this year. This increase in capacity to 15 boats comes as the OPW are optimistic that the historic site will open on time for tourist season on the 14th May.

Skellig Michael Huge tourist interest in visiting the island

A recent major rockfall on the island put into doubt whether the popular tourist site would be open on time. A specialist team sent to the island has now completed their work surveying the areas affected by the rockfall and so far it’s looking good for a May 14th re-opening.

In recent years the island has gained considerable attention due to its appearance in the new Star Wars movies. Visitor numbers are set to soar this year with an estimated 180 a day expected to visit the island.

Last year thirteen boating permits were issued but to deal with the increase in visitor number two additional permits have been introduced.
